I thought STEM was not for me

Miguel Montalvo is a 2021 Latinos in Technology Scholarship recipient. He is a first-generation college student and a current junior at UC Berkeley working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Physics. Miguel is also currently doing a research internship at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. His ultimate goal is to work for NASA one day! Miguel also hopes to one day go back to his home country, El Salvador, to expose younger generations to the physical sciences and the possibilities of STEM paths.

Miguel is our second guest in our newly adapted series called STEM for Success Chats, a video series where scholarship recipients share with students in High School their personal experiences about Miguel is our second guest of the year in our newly adapted series called STEM for Success Chats, a video series where scholarship recipients share with students in High School their personal experiences about pursuing a STEM degree and a STEM career. Students have the opportunity to ask our scholars specific questions about any hurdles they have encountered as they navigate their educational pathway in Silicon Valley.

Only 3% of the Latinx workforce are in the high-tech industry and the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley looks at the scholarship recipients we support as leaders who can lead more Latinx students into STEM careers in Silicon Valley. We know their talents and perspectives have the potential to transform STEM fields. We seek to do more than level the playing field. We aim to change it.
