The Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley (HFSV) hired its first Chief Development Officer almost three years ago. Since then, Clara Roa has hit the ground running by diversifying and increasing funding for the organization. A native of Bogota, Colombia, mother of one, and a transplant to Silicon Valley, Clara shares with us what she has learned in recent years about an organization managed and led by passionate Hispanic leaders.

“The Latinx community in Silicon Valley has deep roots in this land. It is encouraging and at the same time disheartening to see how the Latinx community continues working hard and thriving in this valley, and at the same time often feel like foreigners in their own land. The passion of the local Latino community is so energizing and it motivates me to work harder!”
Here is a bit more about Clara:
Where did you attend school?
I went to College in Bogota, and got a BA degree in Modern Languages and Education from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. I came to the U.S. in 2002 to pursue a Master in Public Administration from NYU.
What’s your favorite show to binge watch?
It varies. It all depends on what mood I am in. Recently I have watched Lupin, the Handmaid’s Tale, and Bridgerton. All great shows in their own way!
Are you a cat or dog person?
I am a dog person. However, this summer we adopted a cat. We are all in love with her but she is a cat after all! Dogs are clearly more loyal and noble than cats. Cats are sassy!
What’s your cat and dog’s name and why?
The cat is named Corn Flake because when we picked her up from the shelter she looked like cornflake in milk when they put her in a box.
The dog is named Elvis. He is also adopted and came with the name. But I do love Elvis Presley’s music so he has the perfect name.
Are your pets bilingual?
Yes! Of course!
What do you look forward to with Hispanic Foundation in 2021?
I am keeping my fingers crossed for an in person Hispanic Foundation Ball. That feel of that event is very difficult to recreate virtually. I look forward to gathering Latino leaders, parents, and students in a room to celebrate the tenacity of the Latino community this year. I also look forward to continuing seeing our programs innovate and evolve during and after the pandemic.
