At the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley (HFSV), we know that real change happens when community organizations come together around a shared mission. One of the most powerful examples of this is our ongoing partnership with Familias Unidas – United Through Education, a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening Latino families through education.
Since 2020, this collaboration has helped us reach more than 1,200 Latino families—including 592 families just in the 2023–2024 school year—with programs that support academic success and inspire a love of learning at home.
A Shared Mission: Supporting Families from the Start
Founded in 2006 by local educators Ninfa and Secundino Zuno, Familias Unidas has built a trusted presence in San Mateo County. Their work focuses on empowering families with children in Pre-K through 8th grade, helping parents establish reading routines, build math confidence, and develop curiosity around STEM topics—all in culturally relevant and engaging ways.
Our partnership with Familias Unidas allows us to combine our resources and vision to support families where learning begins: at home. Together, we are creating more opportunities for Latino families to thrive academically and personally.
One of the most exciting aspects of our partnership is the use of science kits, which each family receives during the program. These hands-on kits, paired with Familias Unidas’ guided workshops, encourage families to explore scientific concepts through play and inquiry.
Parents and children learn together—asking questions, trying experiments, and making real-world connections to what they discover. It’s not just about STEM education—it’s about building confidence and creating joyful learning moments between caregivers and kids.
Expanding the Learning Journey
Familias Unidas lays a strong academic and emotional foundation in the early years. From there, HFSV’s programs for 9th–12th grade students help families continue their journey—providing the tools, mentorship, and guidance needed to make college an achievable reality.
As a small but growing nonprofit, we know that progress comes from partnerships rooted in trust, respect, and shared goals. We’re proud to stand beside Familias Unidas in this work—and deeply grateful for their commitment to the community.
Together, we’re not just educating students. We’re transforming homes, strengthening families, and investing in the next generation of Latino leaders. To learn more about this impactful program, click here.
