Message from President and CEO: Ron Gonzales

The first day of school is right around the corner. However, this school year will be different, and the need for the programs of the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley is greater than ever. We must ensure our Latinx youth can able to gain the necessary skills to compete in tomorrow’s job market. With our summer programs coming to an end, the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley is determined to hold strong as we finalize programming for the fall.

Latinx Speaker Series

On Wednesday, August 5, 2020, the Latinx community of Silicon Valley gathered for the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley’s second Latinx Speaker Series – A Conversation with Latinx Venture Capitalists. The Latinx Speaker Series convenes the diverse sectors of our Latinx community to come together and learn from distinguished speakers about an interesting subject affecting our community. We were delighted to partner with Silicon Valley Bank. Not only was Silicon Valley Bank our event sponsor, but they offered to match every donation we received that day 1:1. We are thrilled to announce that we raised $7,600! To read the full article, click here. To view event highlight video, click here.

Latinos in Technology Initiative

Several of our Latinos in Technology Scholars attended a workshop on how to rock their Linkedin profile in today’s market. The workshop was led by Jaime Zepeda, a regional manager, customer success employee at LinkedIn. Our scholars had an opportunity to learn about how they can leverage their profiles with their potential employers. Special thanks to HFSV Board member Juan Cueva, PhD for connecting us with Jaime Zepeda.

Hispanic Foundation College Success Center

Our workshop facilitator, Sofia Pando – a Latinos in Technology scholarship recipient, led a Girls Who Code discussion about ways in which artificial intelligence is applied to our daily lives and technology! We are thrilled to partner with KIPP Charter Schools and Downtown College Prep for the next couple of weeks as we continue to push our students toward STEM careers.

UC Scout

With 25 students attending the first semester of UC Scout Biology Courses we are pleased to offer students in Silicon Valley with an online curriculum. Scout from University of California provides online course materials designed to inspire lifelong curiosity and prepare pupils of all backgrounds and education levels for an increasingly technological world where training and job skills are mobile, asynchronous, and self-directed. Semester 2 is set to end in Mid-September.

The Ball this year will be different. We will celebrate the spirit of the Ball: the successes of the Hispanic community in Silicon Valley, and the success of our programs with a virtual event on October 17th.

Special thanks for the tremendous support we have received to date from past and new sponsors and many individuals. In a year filled with uncertainty, time and time again, we are reminded about the tenacity and persistence our supporters have in wanting a better quality of life for the Latinx community in Silicon Valley.
