  • This year, the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley (HFSV) has jumped out of the gates with a flurry of activity, thanks to many established and several new partnerships.

We are fortunate to be a part of this vibrant Silicon Valley community. The opportunities to share information and resources with each-other in this region are boundless. We have found collaborations to be a tremendous way to advance our priority initiatives by engaging others in our work and, in turn, share information and opportunities with our family of donors and friends.

Below you will learn about some of the collaborative projects that we are involved with. There are many more to come and we look forward to partnering with others who are dedicated to building a community of engaged leaders and philanthropists in our region.

    Best wishes,
    Teresa Alvarado
    Executive Director

    Board Leadership Panel

In late March, the HFSV was pleased to organize a special event for members of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) - San Jose Chapter.

Our partnership with NSHMBA has focused on our mutual interest in recruiting, training and helping to connect local Latino professionals with nonprofit board service opportunities.

Both organizations believe in the volunteerism and community benefit aspects of nonprofit board service, but we also strongly believe in the opportunity to develop one's governance and leadership skills, as well as professional networks, through board service.

I would like to thank our panelists from the March workshop for sharing their vast experience in business, community and nonprofit sectors, particularly as active nonprofit and foundation board members.

    • Darcie Green, Field Representative for Assemblymember Joe Coto; President, SOMOS Mayfair
    • Jason Rodriguez, Director of Government Affairs for Hewlett-Packard Co.; Vice Chair, After-School All- Stars
    • Erika Williams, Interim CEO and Founder of the Erika Williams Group; Director, Silicon Valley Community Foundation
    • Sonya Cotero Arriola, Director of Diversity Outreach for Bellarmine College Preparatory; Secretary, MACLA
    • Andrea Flores-Shelton, Consultant with Community Crime Prevention Associates; President, Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley

The Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley has collected data about the lack of board diversity, particularly from the Latino community, on nonprofit boards nationally and the need for more Latino board involvement locally. We are currently developing a program to help address this need and will be telling you more about it in the coming months.

We also look forward to working closely with NSHMBA in presenting more conversations on this important topic.
