  • Happy New Year!

I hope that you have been able to maintain a bit of the holiday spirit as 2008 gets fully underway.

Those of us at the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley (HFSV) are starting the year reflecting on our impact in 2007 and planning our goals for 2008. As we plan, we are acutely aware that our ability to build and strategically direct community philanthropy is made possible only through our deep relationships with individuals in this community.

We are committed to building upon the successful partnerships that we have established and to forming new collaborations that will deepen our impact in the community. We look forward to working with you to expand and strengthen the philanthropic leadership in our community.

    Best wishes,
    Teresa Alvarado
    Executive Director

    HFSV Leadership Profile
    Ivonne & Friends

    Special Recognition for Someone Special

Ivonne Montes de Oca was recently honored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals' Silicon Valley Chapter as a Distinguished Volunteer Fundraiser for her efforts on behalf of the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley.

Ivonne, founding HFSV board member and current Board Member Emeritus, has been an irreplaceable source of leadership to the Hispanic Foundation. She has guided the organization through incorporation and start-up infrastructure-building, including operating the foundation out of her downtown business.

She has been a passionate champion for the organization, attracting prominent board leaders and seed funding. As board chair, she took the visionary step of spearheading a collaborative partnership with the Community Foundation of Silicon Valley.

She has also been a key fundraiser for the organization. She has served as chair of the HFSV's signature event, the Hispanic Charity Ball, and was instrumental in the establishment of the HFSV's Silicon Valley Latina Scholarship Fund. For several years, she also provided the HFSV with substantial in- kind graphic design support through her marketing communications firm, The Pinnacle Company.

Always eloquent in expressing her belief in the power of philanthropy and potential of the Hispanic community, Ivonne has directed much support to the Hispanic Foundation and continues to serve as an inspirtation to the leaders of the organization today.

Ivonne would be the first to say that there are many others who were equally instrumental to the success of the HFSV and we certainly recognize their contributions. However, Ivonne has uniquely shaped, guided and invested of herself in the Hispanic Foundation. For that, we thank her.

Celebrating this special recognition with Ivonne (at center of picture) are Jose Villarreal, Al and Carmen Castellano, Rosemary Kamei, Erika Sharron and Teresa Alvarado.

    Healthy Kids Fund
    BAWSI girls

At October's Hispanic Charity Ball, the HFSV announced the second year of the its "Healthy Kids Fund". This fund, supported by a grant from The Health Trust, is aimed at preventing childhood obesity in the Latino community through nutrition education and physical activity.

In its recent report, The 2008 California Report Card: The State of the State's Children, Children Now, a national advocacy organization, highlighted the generally poor health and education status of the state's children by assigning letter grades to key individual determinants. California was assigned a D+ in obesity, citing the following alarming statistics:

    • The rate of childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years. This rapid increase in obesity among children exposes current and future generations to serious health problems and will dramatically increase health care costs borne by the public.
    • Multiple factors contribute to the problem: children's increasingly sedentary lifestyle; extensive marketing of unhealthy food options by the food industry; and, particularly for many low-income children, limited access to healthy foods and safe places to play. As a result, children are eating more high-fat, high-calorie foods and are not physically active.
    • Exercise rates amongst Latinos are particularly concerning. According to the report, 15 percent of Latino children never exercise compared to 7 percent of whites, 6 percent of African Americans and 5 percent of multiethnic children or children of other ethnicities.

These striking statistics are cause for alarm and action in our community. That is why the Hispanic Foundation is continuing to support programs that encourage physical activity for our Latino youth. You can help by contributing to the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley "Healthy Kids Fund" today. Simply go to www.hfsv.org or call 408-278-2210 to make your tax-deductible donation of any amount.

Thank you to those donors who have already contributed and are helping us to address this major issue!

    Special Note:

Whole Foods in Cupertino will be holding a "Back to Health" event on Saturday, January 26th. At Noon, Healthy Silicon Valley's Director, Dr. Amor Santiago, will be speaking on obesity prevention and how environmental factors are affecting obesity in this country. Whole Foods: 20955 Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino.

    Fit for Life
    Richard Calderon

Raising Dollars, One Punch at a Time

One person who has spent a lifetime devoted to physical fitness is San Jose Police Captain Richard Calderon. In November, Capt. Calderon organized a Fitness Challenge and recruited several friends to participate and raise money for the HFSV's "Healthy Kids Fund".

Richard and his friends are concerned about Latino youth and believe that by being more physically active, they can lead healthier and happier lives. This group organized a fun way to raise money for the "Healthy Kids Fund" because they know that by pooling our ideas, energy and money together, we can make a greater impact on the solutions benefiting our community.

Our thanks go to the challenge participants, to Frank Shamrock and the Shamrock Martial Arts Academy for hosting this sweaty event, and to Serious Imaging for the great t-shirts they provided!
