Support our Healthy Kids Fund In 2006, the Hispanic Foundation partnered with The Health Trust to award grants to nonprofit organizations working to prevent childhood obesity in the Latino community through nutrition education and physical activity. This year, we are pleased to announce the second phase of our Healthy Kids Fund, specifically focused on Youth Fitness. With the support of The Health Trust, we are launching this fund with $25,000. Additionally, The Health Trust has issued to us a challenge grant and we have the exciting opportunity to add $50,000 more to the fund with your support! As you probably know, Latino youth have the highest prevalence (37.5 percent) of being or becoming overweight. Overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of being overweight or obese adults. This puts them at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis and other health problems. The benefits of physical fitness are not only health-related. An April 2005 report prepared by the CA Department of Education showed a strong positive relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement. Data from the 2004Physical Fitness Testand CA Standards Tests were used to study the relationship between fitness and academic achievement. The report found that as the overall fitness test scores improved, the English–language arts and mathematics results also improved. So supporting programs that encourage physical activity is important for our youth. And you can make an impact by contributing to the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley Healthy Kids Fund today. Your donation is 100% tax deductible and will be doubled with the challenge grant that has been issued to us. Healthy Kids Fund Fundraiser - A Smashing Good Time! On Friday, November 2nd, San Jose Police Captain Richard Calderon organized a fundraising event to promote youth fitness and raise funds for the HFSV Healthy Kids Fund. Other off-duty police officers and athletic friends of Richard Calderon tested their physical conditioning by taking part in a contest to see how long they could punch a boxing bag at a minimum pace for the longest time period.
Richard Calderon showing us how it’s done: Our thanks also go to Shamrock Martial Arts Academy for hosting the bash and to Serious Imaging who provided t-shirts for all participants. Healthy Kids Fund Donors Thank You for investing in the health of our children!
