2008 Hispanic Charity Ball
Thank you! Thank you to all who attended our October 11, 2008, gala. The feedback we have received has been enthusiastically positive. We appreciate all of you newcomers to the event, I hope that you now feel a part of our familia of philanthropists. And to those of you who attend this unique celebration year after year, thank you for making this an annual tradition. Statement from the Hispanic Charity Ball Chair: Good evening. It is always a pleasure and honor to see so many people gathered in support of the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley, our community’s most prestigious philanthropic event. I was introduced to this organization by attending this spectacular event and I was changed by it. I was moved by the demonstration of strength and generosity of those we honor. I am still immensely proud of what this event represents and what this organization accomplishes: promoting, celebrating, informing and investing. As a growing community, and with the knowledge that Hispanic/Latinos will become a majority in California in just a few years, this year we cast some light on the issue of our environment. Hispanics will have the distinction of being the majority population in California and with this distinction comes great responsibility; the responsibility to address the current threats facing our environment and to ensure that our earth will be preserved for many generations to come. The décor for this year’s ball is centered upon the butterfly. The Monarch butterfly makes annual migrations from Mexico to America traveling as far as 2,000 miles. The migration of the Monarch butterfly reminds me of the migration of our parents and grandparents who came to California and other parts of this country looking for a brighter future. The journeys of our ancestors, like the journeys of the Monarch butterfly, have made our Hispanic community stronger and more determined in reaching its destination. Both the butterfly and our ancestors are enriched by this journey and sustained by both environments. Finally, as tonight’s event chair, I must say that it is extremely humbling to see this celebration of giving come to fruition each year in large part due to the volunteerism of our steering committee. I thank my co-chair, Vintage Foster, as well as all our subcommittee chairs—Hilda Ramirez, Frances Gonzalez, Jim Gonzales, and Holly Perez—and their teams. We also want to thank the dozens of volunteers who have attended training over the past weeks and spent the day setting up, are here with us tonight, and will stay late this evening to wrap things up and provide you with, what I hope will be, an evening to remember. You will see many at the Hispanic Charity Ball gala but they have also attended preparatory meetings leading up to the event. Their assistance is invaluable and they help us to set the finishing touches and set a welcoming tone to the entire event.
